PRESS CONFERENCE WITH THE SECRETARY OF HEALTH AT IHF

MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION REGISTRY PROVIDES VALUABLE FIGURES

On September 30, 2013, the Federal State’s Secretary of Health Mr. Alexander Schweitzer and the project management spokesperson and IHF representative Dr. Gitt presented during a press conference first results of the Myocardial Infarction Registry - Rhineland-Palatinate (MIR-RLP).

The registry included 874 myocardial infarction patients from 52 hospitals. The average age of the patients was 65 years. Two thirds were men. The medical treatment of the patients turned out to be excellent. The high rate of 98% of all patients having their infarction vessel recanalized by means of cardiac catheterization was equally remarkable.

The 90-minute period from first physician contact to cardiac catheterization, defined by cardiological expert groups, is nearly achieved with a median 107 minutes for patients admitted to a hospital’s cathlab. However, it takes almost twice as long, an average of 207 minutes to be exact, when patients are initially admitted to ERs in hospitals without cathlab. Valuable time is lost transferring patients from the admission hospital to a cathlab clinic.

As Dr. Gitt reports, this issue has been a key point of the five regional conferences where the results were discussed with hospitals and paramedics to find ways for improvement. In-hospital mortality in MIR-RLP’s first phase was 9.1% and thus confirming other registries. Results will now be eagerly expected for the second documentation period starting in November 2013 in order to see whether the action agreed upon during the regional conferences will already prove effective.

The MIR-RLP registry is funded by the government of Rhineland-Palatinate and Stiftung IHF on a 60/40 basis.
